Jamala brings victory to Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. The winning song “1944” narrates Stalin’s deportation of Crimean Tatars of 1944.

Jamala performed in English and in Crimean Tatar. “1944” was written by Jamala herself and is based on her tragic family story. Her grand-grandmother Nazylkhan was among the Crimean Tatars deported in 1944. She lost one of her daughters. More about the song here.

Jury’s cumulative voting placed Ukraine’s Jamala on the second place, audience voting granted her victory.

By the way, earlier this day Eurovision commentators awarded Jamala with the best artistic performance on Eurovision song contest 2016.
