“Courage to Report.” An Exhibition About Journalists During the War to Open in Kyiv

A photo exhibition about the resilience of Ukrainian media professionals, “Courage to Report,” will open in Kyiv, marking World Press Freedom Day. The exhibition will be on view from April 30 to May 3 at Kontraktova Square.

The exhibition is co-organized by the Institute of Mass Information (IMI), Internews International, and the Media Development Foundation (MDF), with funding from the European Union.

“Courage to Report” is dedicated to the resilience of Ukrainian journalists and media outlets who, amid Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, continue to serve the public interest, document Russian crimes, counter disinformation, and provide society with reliable information.

The aim of the event is to draw attention to crimes against journalists, the role of independent media during wartime, and the importance of international support for Ukraine.

The opening will take place on April 30 at 12:00. The exhibition will be installed in the pedestrian area in front of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

Exhibition partners include Detector Media, the Georgiy Gongadze Prize, and the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity.

According to the Institute of Mass Information, Russia has committed at least 937 crimes against journalists and media in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war.

At least 129 media workers have been killed by Russia since 2022, including 15 while performing their professional duties and 14 as civilian victims.

At least 337 media outlets have fully closed or were forced to suspend operations due to Russian aggression and its consequences.

Russia has attacked Ukrainian media offices at least 72 times, some repeatedly. At least 64 outlets have been affected by these attacks.

Russia is illegally detaining at least 26 Ukrainian media workers, some of whom have been imprisoned for as long as 10 years.

The Institute of Mass Information (IMI) is a media non-governmental organization that has been operating since 1996. IMI advocates for journalists’ rights, analyzes the media landscape, and covers media-related events, counters propaganda and disinformation, and provides journalists with protective equipment for assignments in combat zones during the Russian-Ukrainian war since 2014.

IMI conducts Ukraine’s only comprehensive monitoring of freedom of speech and maintains a list of transparent and responsible online media. It also documents Russia’s media-related crimes in the war against Ukraine. IMI has representatives in 20 regions of Ukraine and runs a network of “Media Base” hubs to provide continuous support for journalists. Among IMI’s partners is Reporters Without Borders, and the organization is also a member of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX).
