Russian Strike Damages 11 Educational Institution in Kyiv

Eleven schools, preschools, and colleges were damaged in Kyiv after Russia’s latest massive missile and drone attack. The strike highlights the growing toll on Ukraine’s education system as the war enters another year.

Eleven educational institutions across three districts of Kyiv were damaged during Russia’s latest large-scale aerial attack on the Ukrainian capital overnight on June 2, city officials said.

According to Valentyn Mondriivskyi, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, the damaged facilities include five preschools, four schools, one vocational education institution, and one college located in the Podilskyi, Solomianskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts of the city.

“Unfortunately, Russian attacks continue to damage the capital’s educational infrastructure,” Mondriivskyi said. “Today, 11 educational institutions in three districts of the city have been affected. Most of the damage consists of shattered and damaged windows. Together with district administrations and city services, we are already working to eliminate the consequences of the attack. Our task is to restore these institutions as quickly as possible and ensure safe conditions for children and education workers.”

Specialists are currently inspecting the affected buildings and assessing the scope of restoration work required.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Kyiv’s educational infrastructure has repeatedly been damaged by missile and drone attacks. City officials report that nearly 200 educational institutions in the Ukrainian capital have sustained damage during the war. Most have already been repaired, while restoration work continues at other sites.

The damage occurred during a massive overnight Russian missile and drone assault that targeted Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities. According to Ukrainian authorities, the attack killed at least six people in Kyiv and injured more than 60 others, including children. Residential buildings, civilian infrastructure, and public facilities were damaged across multiple districts of the capital.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched hundreds of drones and more than 70 missiles during the overnight attack, one of the largest aerial assaults recorded in recent months. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted the majority of incoming threats, but dozens of missiles and drones still struck targets across the country.
