Crimeans Forced to Renounce Ukrainian Citizenship Under Russian Rule

Crimeans, who are invited to participate in the jury in Russia-controlled courts on the peninsula, as well as during the conscription into the Russian army, are forced to renounce Ukrainian citizenship.

This issue was raised at the meeting of the association “Crimean Solidarity” by a lawyer Lily Gemedzhi.

According to her, lawyers receive citizens’ appeals on this matter.

“Many people turn to lawyers with the question: “We received summonses for participation in the jury duties, but the Russian occupation authorities also demand the renunciation of our Ukrainian citizenship”. “This, according to Ukrainian legislation, is illegal and is not valid” – Gemedzhi said.

The court of the jury should start its work in the annexed Crimea in 2018.

After the annexation of Crimea, the Russian authorities draft Crimeans in their army. Most public events on the peninsula are accompanied by the propaganda of service in the Armed Forces of Russia. Crimeans are drafted to serve in the Russian army in defiance of the international legislation and decisions of the UN General Assembly.

According to the Crimean human rights group, about 10 thousand Crimeans were drafted in the Russian army in three years. In January 2018, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea asked residents of the peninsula to contact the office by phone or e-mail in case of receiving the conscripts for service in the Russian army.
