On August 12, the documentary film The Last Message will be screened in New York as part of the Chain NYC Film Festival.
The Last Message begins as a story of personal tragedy. Ukrainian-American Kelsie Kimberlin travels to Ukraine seeking to understand the circumstances surrounding the death of someone close to her. But gradually, this personal investigation grows into a much broader journey through a country at war.
As she meets Ukrainian soldiers, journalists, witnesses, and victims of Russian crimes, she confronts a question that becomes central to the entire film: Who will be held accountable for what has been done — and how?
The film’s answer is clear:
RUSSIA MUST PAY.
This is more than a slogan. The film addresses the need for real accountability for Russia’s crimes and the right of those harmed by Russian aggression to seek justice and compensation. In the film’s final chapter, this idea moves from a moral demand to concrete action, as Kelsie Kimberlin takes legal action against the Russian Federation.
The Last Message was created by an international team of filmmakers working in Ukraine and the United States. A significant part of the film was shot on location in Ukraine, in places where the consequences of Russian aggression are not images on a television screen, but part of people’s everyday lives.
It is especially important to us to present The Last Message to New York’s Ukrainian community. We hope this screening will be more than an opportunity to watch a film. We want it to become a conversation about what comes after bearing witness to a crime: how memory becomes a demand for justice, and how that demand can become action.
Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the film’s central participant, Kelsie Kimberlin, and the film’s director and editor, Andrii Voloshyn.
This will be an opportunity to speak directly with the person whose personal story became the starting point of the film and with one of its creators — about the events depicted in the documentary, the making of the film in Ukraine and the United States, and its central theme: accountability for Russia’s crimes.
