The Moscow Oil Refinery attack marks the second successful Ukrainian drone strike in less than a week, triggering fires, disrupting operations, and exposing vulnerabilities near Russia’s capital.

Ukrainian forces launched a large-scale drone attack on Moscow on the night of June 17–18, 2026, successfully striking the capital’s main oil refinery for the second time in less than a week.

The attack targeted the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district, southeast of the city center, causing multiple fires across key facilities.

According to reports and geolocated footage, Ukrainian drones hit several critical parts of the refinery, including the combined oil refining unit, a secondary processing unit, and an oil tank farm. Thick black smoke rose over the area, and residents reported falling debris and what some described as “oil rain.”

The refinery is one of the largest fuel suppliers to the Moscow region, making it a strategically significant target.

This marks the second Ukrainian strike on the facility within days. The previous attack took place on the night of June 15–16.

The repeated targeting of the refinery suggests a deliberate Ukrainian effort to disrupt Russia’s domestic fuel production and logistics near the capital.Russian air defenses claimed to have intercepted a significant number of drones approaching Moscow. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that nearly 200 Ukrainian drones were shot down on approach to the city. However, he acknowledged that several drones still reached the refinery and caused damage. Some Russian sources reported even higher interception numbers across the wider Moscow region.

The drone threat forced the temporary closure of all four major Moscow airports – Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo – disrupting hundreds of flights. Moscow Oblast Governor Andrey Vorobyov also reported drone strikes and resulting fires in parts of the region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked the strikes to recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory, including a strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Ukrainian officials framed the operation as a legitimate response against Russian energy infrastructure that supports the ongoing war effort.

The attack is part of Ukraine’s broader long-range drone campaign against Russian oil refineries and energy facilities. Over the past months, Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Russia’s oil infrastructure, aiming to degrade its fuel production capacity and create economic and logistical pressure inside Russia.

While Russian authorities described the strikes as terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure, Ukrainian sources emphasized the military significance of the targets. The Moscow Oil Refinery has now become a recurring focus of Ukrainian strikes, highlighting both Ukraine’s growing long-range strike capabilities and the vulnerability of Russian energy assets even near the capital.

Damage assessments are still ongoing, but initial reports confirm multiple fires and operational disruption at one of Russia’s most important oil facilities in the Moscow region.

The attack once again demonstrated Ukraine’s ability to conduct deep strikes despite Russia’s efforts to strengthen air defenses around its major cities.
