Ukrainian documentary The Last Message follows American singer Kelsie Kimberlin’s journey across wartime Ukraine, honoring her fallen cousin through personal stories, music, and remembrance.

The film’s main protagonist is American singer and songwriter of Ukrainian descent Kelsie Kimberlin, who travels across Ukraine from the western border to near the front line in Donbas, where her cousin Andrii Rachok is buried. He was a volunteer soldier who was killed in early 2024 during the fighting for Avdiivka. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

Shortly before his death, they were unable to speak to each other, and this became the basis for the film’s title — The Last Message. Kelsie is accompanied by her father and friends as they deliver humanitarian and military supplies and ask local residents about their lives. The film is shot in a direct observational style and may at times seem like a simple collection of monologues and interviews. However, in these moments, the filmmakers skillfully break away from conventional television formats and present the situations from an unusual perspective.

The composer is renowned jazz pianist Yurii Shepeta, while the sound engineer is also a jazz musician — double bassist Maksym Hladetskyi. The recording was carried out at the facilities of the Ukrainian Radio Recording House in Kyiv. The film has received a number of awards specifically for its music and sound.

The theatrical release of The Last Message begins on September 24 and will take place at Oscar cinema chain. The project has resulted in more than just the film itself. The artist’s YouTube channel also features several interviews with prominent Ukrainians (some of whom were briefly mentioned in the film) as well as several music videos filmed in Ukraine.
