Ukrainian Athlete Wins European Title in Statement Victory

Ukrainian wrestler Oksana Livach triumphed at the 2026 European Championship and made her Russian opponent listen to Ukraine’s national anthem. Her victory became not only a sporting achievement but also a symbolic blow.

The Ukrainian competed at the European Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Albania in the 50 kg weight category.

Livach began the tournament with a bout against Switzerland’s Svenja Jungo (12:1), and in the semifinals she confidently defeated 2025 World Championship bronze medalist, “neutral” athlete Yelizaveta Smirnova (6:2).

In the final bout, the Ukrainian overcame 2025 World Championship bronze medalist Evin Demirhan of Turkey, defeating her 11:0 and securing Ukraine’s first victory at the continental championship.

A symbolic gesture at the award ceremony

After the final, the Ukrainian stepped onto the top step of the podium, making her Russian opponent listen to Ukraine’s national anthem during the award ceremony.

“I told myself that after winning, I would definitely make this gesture. For me, it was first and foremost for our soldiers and for all the people who stand for Ukraine today. It’s a reminder that we do not forget about them. It’s about memory, gratitude, and respect. And at the same time, it is my pride for my country. I love Ukraine with all my heart and wanted the whole world to see these words at that very moment,” said Oksana Livach.

During the ceremony, Livach not only celebrated her victory but also emphasized her stance — in particular with a patriotic “Glory to Ukraine” inscription on her hand and an emotional reaction to the national anthem.

The gold medal became the Ukrainian wrestler’s second consecutive European title. She also won championships in 2019 and 2025, and added silver medals in 2020 and 2023 in this division.
