Ukraine has secured its first medal at the 2026 European Fencing Championships after Olympic champion Alina Komashchuk won bronze in the women’s individual saber event.

The 31-year-old Ukrainian fencer earned the bronze medal on June 17 in Antony, France, giving the national team an early boost at the continental championships.

The European Fencing Championships are one of the most important annual events on the international fencing calendar, organized by the European Fencing Confederation. They bring together top athletes from more than 40 European nations and feature both individual and team competitions across the three weapons: foil, épée, and saber.

The 2026 edition is taking place in Antony, a city near Paris with a strong fencing tradition. The tournament runs from June 15 to June 21 and serves as a major competitive platform in the post-Olympic cycle. It allows athletes to gain valuable experience, improve their world rankings, and prepare for upcoming World Championships and the next Olympic cycle.

Komashchuk progressed steadily through the women’s individual saber competition. In the group stage, she secured four victories out of six bouts. She then dominated the knockout rounds, defeating Poland’s Zuzanna Ceslar 15-11 in the round of 32. She followed this with convincing 15-11 wins over Greece’s Despina Georgiadou and France’s Sara Nutchu. Her run ended in the semifinal, where she lost to Spain’s Lucia Martin-Portugues 7-15.

Despite falling short of the final, Komashchuk’s bronze medal marks a significant achievement. It is her seventh European Championship medal and represents Ukraine’s first podium finish at the 2026 event.

Alina Komashchuk is one of Ukraine’s most accomplished fencers. She won Olympic gold as part of the Ukrainian women’s saber team at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Over the years, she has consistently performed at the highest level, combining technical skill with competitive experience.

This bronze medal opens Ukraine’s account at the European Championships and highlights the continued strength of the country’s saber program. With several days of competition remaining, Ukrainian athletes still have opportunities to add more medals in both individual and team events across different weapons.

As the championships progress, the Ukrainian delegation will look to build on this first medal. Additional strong performances could come from other team members in the remaining events scheduled through the weekend.

Komashchuk’s bronze serves as both a personal milestone and a positive sign for Ukrainian fencing. It shows that the country’s athletes remain competitive on the international stage despite the difficult circumstances facing Ukrainian sport in recent years.

With the tournament still ongoing until June 21, Ukraine will aim to increase its medal tally before the championships conclude.
