In Kyiv, at the Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, two surgeries were performed in adjacent operating rooms: a cesarean section, followed immediately by a procedure to correct a life-incompatible congenital heart defect in the newborn.
This operation is unprecedented in the history of medicine.
The mother traveled specifically from Moldova to give birth at the Ukrainian cardiac center, as her baby was diagnosed during pregnancy with a severe congenital heart defect known as transposition of the great arteries.
During the pregnancy, the child was found to have transposition of the great arteries and a restrictive oval foramen.
Moldovan doctors recommended consulting Ukrainian cardiac surgeon Illya Yemets, whose surgical success rate is as high as 95%.
Now, little Luka is recovering successfully, breathing and eating independently. His heart is completely healthy.
