Moldova’s President Maia Sandu Arrives in Kyiv

On Sunday, April 26, on the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster, Moldova’s President Maia Sandu arrived in Kyiv on an official visit.

According to Suspilne, she wrote about it on her Facebook page.

According to her, she is scheduled to meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and to visit Chornobyl, where she will pay tribute to those who “gave their health and lives for Europe.”

“This morning, as we mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, I am going to Kyiv for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as to Chornobyl — to pay tribute to those who gave their health or even their lives to protect Europe from an even greater tragedy,” Sandu wrote.

She emphasized that the Chernobyl nuclear accident “showed us that disasters know no borders, but it also demonstrated the power of international solidarity.” In her view, the protective shelter over the damaged reactor is proof that countries can achieve extraordinary things when they act together.

“We need the same unity and determination today — to protect peace in Europe. Moldova stands with those who build, not destroy,” the President of Moldova wrote.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he held a meeting with Maia Sandu.

“I am glad to welcome the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, to Ukraine. We appreciate this visit on such a special day, when we remember the accident at the Chornobyl station and the enormous solidarity and self-sacrifice of our people, which made it possible to protect our country and our entire region, all of Europe and the world from an even greater radiation disaster,” the president wrote.

He noted that during the talks, the parties focused on security issues, cross-border cooperation, and the protection and development of infrastructure and energy. Special attention was given to a substantive discussion of “our shared path to the European Union.”

“We are currently working to ensure that all six clusters open promptly and that membership in the European Union becomes our shared success — of Ukraine, Moldova, and the entire EU,” Zelenskyy wrote.

He also emphasized that Ukraine will continue to support Moldova on security issues, particularly regarding the Transnistrian region. In addition, Kyiv confirmed its readiness for further development of trilateral cooperation involving Romania.

“Thank you personally to Maia and to all of Moldova for supporting Ukraine and for the cooperation that strengthens our entire region,” Zelenskyy added.
