Romanian President Bolojan has signed a law allowing the military to shoot down “stray” Russian drones.

Acting Romanian President Ilie Bolojan has signed a law expanding the powers of the army, allowing it to shoot down UAVs that are illegally present in the country’s airspace.

As reported by Censor.NET, citing European Pravda.

“Ilie Bolojan has signed into law a bill passed by parliament, which permits the shooting down of drones illegally present in Romania’s airspace, as well as legislation concerning military missions and operations on Romanian territory during peacetime,” Digi24 reports.

What preceded it

It is noted that work on the law began after a series of incidents in which Russian combat UAVs, used to attack the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa, crossed into Romanian territory. The law was finally approved by parliament in February 2025.

At the same time, Romania’s far-right parties challenged the law in the Constitutional Court but lost the case.

As a reminder, in March, fragments of a Russian UAV carrying explosives were discovered on Romanian territory near the border with Moldova. The Ministry of Defense detonated the explosives on site.
