A shipment of 76 emergency generators from EU strategic reserves arrived in Kyiv to support Ukraine’s energy resilience, with more equipment expected for frontline regions and major cities.

A shipment of 76 emergency generators from the EU’s strategic reserves arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday to help restore electricity supply in Ukrainian communities. A total of 300 generators out of the 447 announced by the European Commission are already in Ukraine.

According to an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent, this is immediate EU assistance for urgent needs and part of the EU’s ongoing support for Ukraine’s energy resilience.

Speaking to journalists, European Union Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova said she was pleased to be able to “demonstrate concrete assistance that the European Union is providing to Ukraine.”

“This is only a small part of the equipment we are transferring to Ukraine. Some of it is currently still at customs,” she said.

The ambassador explained that this delivery is part of the 447 generators previously announced by the European Commission due to extremely low temperatures in Ukraine in January. The total value of these generators amounts to EUR 3.7 million. Some of the equipment will be delivered to frontline regions of Ukraine.

Overall, more than 10,000 generators have already been provided since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

In total, as Mathernova noted, the EU has provided EUR 190 billion in assistance since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Maryna Denysiuk stressed the need to provide energy assistance to Ukrainian cities and communities suffering from Russian attacks. According to her, the equipment received from the EU “will also be used by water utilities to power pumping stations.”

“The generators will be evenly distributed across the regions. Special attention is being given to large cities such as Kyiv and Dnipro. Kyiv will receive two more large generators; they are still en route,” the deputy minister said.

Denysiuk thanked the EU and added that Ukraine is working with its partners on a daily basis to secure additional assistance, particularly large generators.

Deputy Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross Illia Kletskovskyi noted that “the Ukrainian Red Cross is fulfilling its auxiliary role for the state,” welcoming a new stage of cooperation on the delivery of generators.

“However, within the framework of civil protection and partnership with the Civil Protection Mechanism, together with the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development, today we have launched additional cooperation specifically on the supply of generators. I believe this is the beginning of such cooperation. Here you see 76 generators. Seventy-two have already been unloaded. Two more consignments have already been sent to Kropyvnytskyi,” he said.

Kletskovskyi expressed hope that the EU would continue to provide energy support to Ukraine and involve the Ukrainian Red Cross in the delivery and installation of generators.
