A 30-meter Ukrainian flag was unfurled in front of the European Parliament in Brussels on August 23, Ukraine’s State Flag Day, in a powerful display of solidarity with a country continuing to fight for its freedom and European future.
The ceremony was organized by the Mission of Ukraine to the European Union and brought together European officials and Ukrainian diplomats ahead of Ukraine’s Independence Day.
European Parliament Vice-President Nicolae Ștefănuță used the occasion to call for stronger and faster support for Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.
He said the EU should maintain momentum in advancing Ukraine’s accession process while deepening the country’s integration into the European single market.
Ștefănuță also stressed the urgent need to provide Ukraine with additional air-defense capabilities, warning that the need has become “more urgent than ever.” With winter approaching, he said Europe must do everything possible to protect the safety and well-being of the Ukrainian people.
“Dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone. The European Parliament will always stand by you,” Ștefănuță said.
He pledged continued diplomatic, financial and military support for Ukraine and said European institutions would work with international partners to increase pressure on Russia.
The goal, he emphasized, must be a “just, lasting and comprehensive peace” in which Ukraine is fully involved and able to negotiate from a position of strength.
The symbolism of the ceremony was particularly significant. The blue-and-yellow flag has become far more than a national emblem during Russia’s full-scale invasion. It represents Ukraine’s sovereignty, resilience, freedom and determination to remain an independent European state.
Ukraine marks State Flag Day on August 23, one day before Independence Day. Across the country, official flag-raising ceremonies, commemorations and educational events honor the national flag as one of the central symbols of Ukrainian statehood and the struggle for independence.
In Brussels, the enormous blue-and-yellow banner carried that message directly to the heart of Europe: Ukraine is fighting not only for its own survival, but for its place in a free and united Europe.
