€2 billion, F-16 jets, and drone warfare expansion — Europe just escalated its support for Ukraine. Here’s what Belgium and Spain’s new military packages mean now.

Belgium and Spain have announced a major new military support package for Ukraine, pledging a combined €2 billion and expanding cooperation in advanced defense capabilities, including F-16 fighter jets, air defense, and drone warfare.

According to Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov, Kyiv has secured commitments of €1 billion each from Brussels and Madrid this year. The agreements reflect a broader European push to strengthen Ukraine’s battlefield resilience and long-term defense capacity as the war with Russia grinds on.

Belgium confirmed plans to supply additional F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, alongside critical spare parts to maintain and expand the operational readiness of aircraft already in service. The move is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its airspace and intercept incoming missile and drone threats.

Spain’s €1 billion contribution will focus on both immediate military needs and longer-term industrial cooperation. Talks between Kyiv and Madrid included participation in the European SAFE mechanism, aimed at strengthening joint defense production across the continent.

Ukraine has also предложed deeper industrial partnerships, offering Spanish defense companies opportunities to collaborate with Ukrainian manufacturers. Officials say Kyiv is prepared to provide a list of domestic producers to accelerate integration and co-production.

In a notable step, Ukraine invited Spain to test its unmanned aerial systems under real battlefield conditions—an offer that underscores Kyiv’s growing role as a proving ground for next-generation military technologies.

The agreements come as Europe intensifies support for Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. Ukrainian officials emphasize that such partnerships are critical not only for immediate battlefield needs but also for sustaining long-term deterrence.

Enhanced air defense, expanded drone capabilities, and increased artillery supply—particularly through initiatives like the Czech-led ammunition program—remain top priorities.

The announcements follow a broader trend of Western military backing. The United Kingdom recently unveiled a £100 million aid package, further reinforcing coordinated transatlantic support.

For U.S. and global audiences, the latest commitments signal that Europe is stepping up both financially and strategically—sharing more of the burden while accelerating Ukraine’s transition toward NATO-compatible capabilities.

As Ukraine continues to face sustained attacks, the ability to integrate advanced Western systems, scale domestic production, and deepen defense alliances will be decisive in shaping the next phase of the war.
