President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he does not consider the creation of a demilitarized economic zone in Donbas to be fair, because first of all it would be unclear who would govern it.
According to Ukrinform, the head of state said this while answering journalists’ questions.
“Russia wants to avoid expending forces and to occupy the east of our country through diplomatic and political means. And then the United States of America said: ‘Let’s have such a compromise. The Russian army will not enter part of our east, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will withdraw.’ I do not consider this fair, because this economic zone… who will govern it?” Zelenskyy said.
In his view, the compromise principles proposed by the American side are not fair.
“If we are talking about some kind of buffer zone along the line of contact, and if we are talking about some kind of economic zone, and we believe that there should only be a police mission there and that troops should withdraw, then the question is very simple: if Ukrainian troops withdraw 5 or 10 kilometers, for example, then why do Russian troops not withdraw deeper into the occupied territories?” the President noted.
He added that there is currently no answer to this question, “but it is very sensitive and very heated.”
