Ukrainian chess player Myron Netrebka excelled at the World Youth Chess Championships for boys and girls under the age of nine.

Netrebka won the world championship title at a tournament in Roquetas de Mar, Spain. The World Youth Chess Championships in the under-nine age category concluded on October 20, with the Ukrainian player claiming the gold medal. This was reported by Korrespondent.

The competition consisted of 11 rounds played under the Swiss system. Netrebka scored 9.5 points out of a possible 11 to finish first in the final standings.

Netrebka finished half a point ahead of his closest competitor, Saifuddin Erkinboev of Uzbekistan.

Polish chess player Wiktor Stankowski took third place with 8.5 points.

World Chess Championship for Players Under Nine:

1. Myron Netrebka (Ukraine) – 9.5 points

2. Saifuddin Erkinboev (Uzbekistan) – 9 points

3. Wiktor Stankowski (Poland) – 8.5 points

The 2026 World Chess Championships, held in Spain, featured players aged 7 to 17. The competition included separate tournaments for boys and girls across six age categories.

Netrebka also amazed everyone with his ability to play blindfold chess. The nine-year-old demonstrated this impressive skill during an exhibition game played in Dnipro.

Blindfolded, Netrebka played a game against Tymofii Dudin, head of the Dnipro Interregional Department of the Ministry of Justice. Myron kept the positions of all the pieces on the chessboard in his memory and made his moves by announcing the squares to which his pieces should move, without seeing the board. His opponent, meanwhile, could see the board and assess the positions of his pieces directly.

After the game against the nine-year-old Netrebka, Dudin threw up his hands, saying that even the advantage of being able to see the pieces on the chessboard had not helped him defeat the young champion.
