EU plans sanctions on 40 more Russian shadow fleet vessels, aiming to cut war financing, as Ukraine says hundreds of tankers still evade oil restrictions.

The European Union has announced plans to impose sanctions on an additional 40 vessels belonging to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”

This was stated by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, Censor.NET reports, citing European Pravda.

Another 40 vessels

“We will adopt a decision today regarding vessels of the ‘shadow fleet.’ We have 40 additional ships, as well as their facilitators,” she said.

Kallas added that these measures are being taken “to deprive Russia of the means to finance this war.”

What preceded this?

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 610 tankers belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet are currently under sanctions, but another 340 vessels still need to be sanctioned, 65 of which are key.

It is known that since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has created a shadow fleet of more than 1,240 tankers — often old and unsafe — allowing it to circumvent sanctions and continue selling oil.
