Russia has begun using Shahed-type kamikaze drones equipped with suspended R-60 missiles, which may pose an additional danger even after impact. Experts warn that approaching such munitions is strictly prohibited due to the risk of radiation exposure.

This was reported by radio electronic warfare and communications expert Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, according to 24 Kanal.

Why is the R-60 missile especially dangerous after impact?

The R-60 air-to-air missile that the Russians are mounting on Shahed drones has a modernized warhead with rod-type striking elements. According to specialists, uranium is used in these components.

Formally, the warhead is considered a “sealed source of low-level radiation,” however, the actual background level may differ significantly from the figures stated in Soviet-era manuals.

The missile poses a particular danger after impact, when its integrity is compromised and protective elements are damaged.

In addition to the radiation risk, it may be equipped with a contact, radar, or combined proximity fuze, which creates the threat of a secondary explosion.

What should you do if you find a Shahed with a missile?

Experts stress that if debris from a Shahed drone carrying an R-60 missile is discovered, it is strictly forbidden to approach it closer than 2 meters. Do not touch the munition, move it, or attempt to examine it up close.

You should immediately move to a safe distance, restrict access for bystanders, and report the find to the relevant emergency services (the State Emergency Service). Only specialists with appropriate protective gear and equipment should work at the site.

What other weapons has Russia modified?

Shahed drones that attacked the Kovel–Kyiv railway line were carrying magnetic mines, which they dropped into the snow. It was reported that these mines may later self-destruct.

Flash has also reported infrared spotlights appearing on Russian Shahed kamikaze drones. These spotlights are intended to blind Ukrainian interceptor drones and aircraft at night. In this way, the Russians are trying to protect their UAVs from being shot down.

In early 2026, Russia for the first time launched a new type of weapon against Ukraine — the Geran-5 strike drone.
