Kherson’s thermal power plant has been hit multiple times by Russian strikes, making normal operations impossible. Residents receive heaters amid energy shortages and ongoing shelling.

Russian forces continue targeted attacks on Kherson’s energy infrastructure. In just the first days of the new year, the Kherson Thermal Power Plant (TPP) was hit by more than ten precision strikes from artillery and drones, making normal operations impossible. Due to risks to the heating supply, residents of the city are being provided with heaters.

This was reported by the chairman of Naftogaz of Ukraine, Serhiy Koretskyi, according to OBOZ.UA. He stated that in the past two days alone, the facility was struck more than ten times, and on the morning of January 2, another attack occurred, with four hits recorded.

Due to ongoing shelling, the Kherson TPP can no longer operate normally. Company specialists are working on-site as much as the security situation allows, assessing the extent of the damage and determining the next steps to stabilize the situation.

“For us, it is crucial to protect people and respond quickly even under such conditions,” Koretskyi said.

Heating supply in Kherson: what’s happening

Naftogaz emphasizes that all actions are coordinated with local authorities to provide residents of Kherson with heat as quickly as possible. Due to the TPP’s inability to operate fully, alternative heating options for homes are being considered.

In particular, the company has already delivered 1,000 electric heaters to the city for distribution to residents. In addition, Kherson is set to receive 500 gas-powered heaters soon. Another 1,000 of these devices have already been purchased, with delivery pending for further distribution to the city.

Naftogaz stresses that these measures are a forced response amid Russia’s systematic attacks on critical infrastructure in frontline regions.

Experts and energy specialists have repeatedly emphasized that Russian strikes on thermal power plants and boiler houses are part of a tactic of energy terrorism aimed at creating a humanitarian crisis and putting pressure on civilians. Kherson, which is constantly under shelling, remains one of the most vulnerable cities.

According to OBOZ.UA, new Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure were also recorded on the night of January 2. By morning, power outages affected consumers in the Zaporizhzhia region, including the city of Zaporizhzhia, as well as other frontline areas.
